What is the Collaborative Learning College?

The Collaborative Learning College is a recovery college that offers nonclinical-based education and training programs offered to people who have lived/living experience of mental health and/or substance use challenges, and who feel ready to set goals, gain skills and make social connections as part of their personal journey. In keeping with internationally adopted approach to recovery-oriented education, the courses offered at the Collaborative Learning College will be:

  • co-created and co-led by people with lived experience of mental health and/or addiction challenges and/or social services use
  • offered free of charge 
  • adaptable to local needs and resources
  • open to people who have experienced mental health and/or addiction challenges and/or social services use, their family members, friends and health care providers, when appropriate.

Combatting Mental Health Advocacy Burnout

Tired of advocating for your mental health? You’re not alone. In this 3-part series, we will look at the stages of advocacy burnout, how it applies to our mental health and explore different ways to reset before hitting burnout. This course will encourage conversations around how we approach mental health self-disclosures and alternative forms of advocacy. Through interactive exercises, participants will also have a chance to build confidence advocating within a supportive space. You will walk away with the tools to better understand advocacy boundaries and limits, so you can advocate without sacrificing your mental health.

Harm Reduction Drop-In Group

Join us for an informal 'come as you are' style drop-in group to discuss all things harm reduction. In this drop-in group we will create a non-judgmental space for people to talk about their experiences, explore a variety of harm reduction related topics and share practical harm reduction strategies.

Stand Up Comedy for Mental Health

A collaborative and supportive comedy course that will help participants reframe their lived experience of mental health and addiction through the lens of humour. Participants of this course will learn about joke structure, comedic ethics when talking about lived experience and be supported to develop their comedic style over the 6 weeks.

Facilitation Training

Facilitation has never been more important. In an age of ever-more meetings, workshops, and training courses, having someone in the room whose job it is to create engagement and make things easier for the group is vital to creating great outcomes. In this 8-week course, we’ll explore what facilitation is, the skills you need to become a great facilitator, and how to improve your facilitation practice.

Exploring & Healing Our Body Image

Join us for an insightful discussion about the impacts of unrealistic beauty standards, self-image and how to heal our relationship with ourselves. In 3 sessions, we will explore Explore how body image misconceptions are formed and reinforced in our society as well as strategies to help you establish a healthy relationship with your body.

Health Out Loud and the CAMH Collaborative Learning College are excited to bring you our monthly Peer Support drop-in group. Join us for a one-hour, interactive and informal group for those looking to connect with others in a supportive space. Bring your lunch, your worries, your support, and your experience.

Disclosure and Accommodation in the Workplace

Do you know your rights when it comes to disclosure of your mental health and/or addiction challenges in the workplace? Join us as we explore the what, when, and how of disclosure and employment. This workshop will help you understand how to request and advocate for workplace accommodations.

The Embodied Mind

Personal experiences, and a growing body of rigorous insights point to a mind-body connection that has significant potential to improve or impede peoples’ lifestyles. What is it about this mind-body feedback loop that makes us feel good, and what practical strategies can we learn from each other to cultivate the benefits of the interconnected nature of movement, mentality, and lifestyle?

Mindfulness Drop-In Group

Join us on Tuesdays for multiple guided meditations, a practice discussion and 20 minutes of mindfulness practice. Participants are invited to share wisdom from their own practice, and each week we'll examine a topic in the study of mindfulness to explore in more depth. This is a drop in session and no prior experience is required.

Food for the Mind, Body, Soul and Budget

This course explores food through six different sessions: budget-friendly cooking, using leftovers, maximizing nutritional value, food for mental health, foods by colour, and foods of the world. Each session will allow participants the opportunity to share personal food-related experiences and memories, as well as participate in interactive activities and trivia games. Sessions will include downloadable PDF resources as well as delicious (and, “out-of-the-ordinary”) recipes and kitchen hacks to elevate your culinary skills. Join our table and spice up your day with our six-week course that focuses on all-things food!

Global Healing Methods

In collaboration with the Fleming College Child and Youth Care Program, we are offering students the opportunity to take part in their Global Healing Methods course. The aim of the course is to expand students’ knowledge of modalities and approaches to healing which diverge from traditional western medical approaches. Learners will also develop attunement on the co-creation of spaces within relationships. Through this partnership, you will be eligible to receive a credit at Fleming College in the Child and Youth Care Program, free of charge.

ExperieNCe: Working in Groups - Self-directed

In collaboration with CAMH and Niagara college, this course will discuss topics related to working with others and aims to build personal and professional skills through shared experiences and reflection. Concepts such as group dynamics, conflict management, decision making and building successful working relationships with others is at the center of discussion.
Through this partnership, you will be eligible for a credit at Niagara College in the Child and Youth Care or Educational Assistant Special Needs Support Program by completing this course, free of charge
If you are interested in attending college, this pathway has many advantages. You will not only receive a credit, we will also support you along the way to assist you in getting to Niagara College and supporting you while you are there
