Through a series of exercises and examples, participants will be encouraged to build a mindful writing practice, develop their own voice, and be an active part of a creative community. While you are welcome to focus on a particular form through the entire course, you will have an opportunity to explore all forms.

Making Music with Technology

How do composers write music with computers? What shifts in how we make and use music are emerging as computer technology becomes more powerful? In this course, we will learn how music can be composed and performed using computers and other digital technologies. Over six weeks, participants will learn about some of the technologies that power the modern music industry and its artists. There will be two workshops. In one, participants will learn the basics of a simple, free programming language that gives its users the power to create music algorithmically. In the other, participants will work with the instructor as he uses composition software to write a piece of music with the class. We will also look into the future, learning how artificial intelligence may change how music is written, and how it may one day make everyone a composer.
